What does a Zoho People consultant do for an Indian company?
In India, a Zoho People consultant configures earned, casual and sick leave policies by state, festival and restricted holiday lists, biometric and geo-tagged field attendance, shift and comp-off rules, onboarding document collection and full and final exit steps, then aligns the data with Zoho Payroll or your payroll consultant for PF, ESI and other statutory processing. Labor law questions belong with your HR or legal advisor.

Indian companies often reach Zoho People because attendance has become the monthly bottleneck. Biometric exports that do not match shift rosters, field sales staff marking presence on WhatsApp, comp-off claims nobody can verify and leave balances kept in Excel all land on HR in the last week of the month, just before salaries are processed.
I work remotely with manufacturers, distributors, IT and services firms, retail chains and multi-branch businesses across India to set up Zoho People properly: leave by state, attendance by work type, onboarding and exits as tracked processes.
Leave entitlements and statutory obligations differ by state and by establishment type. Your HR advisor, labor law consultant or legal counsel decides those; I configure what they confirm.
The work follows your states, branches, workforce types and the payroll route you use today, whether Zoho Payroll or a payroll consultant.
Earned or privilege, casual, sick, maternity and other leave types configured per state or branch as your advisor confirms, including carry-forward, encashment flags and sandwich rules your policy uses.
National, festival and state holidays per location, plus restricted or optional holidays employees choose from, so a Pune branch and a Chennai branch each see the right calendar.
Supported biometric devices at plants and offices, mobile check-in with location for field sales and service staff, and regularization requests approved by reporting managers.
General, rotating and night shifts, weekly offs that differ by unit, and compensatory off earned for working on holidays, validated against actual attendance before it is credited.
Document collection at joining, background verification tasks, probation confirmation and a full and final checklist covering notice period, asset return and clearance from each department.
Attendance, loss of pay days, leave encashment inputs and joiners or leavers flowing to Zoho Payroll or your payroll consultant's process, with a monthly cut-off and a reconciliation check.

Leave in India is shaped by more than company policy. State Shops and Establishments Acts, factory rules for manufacturing units and standing orders in some workplaces all influence leave and holidays, and the details differ from state to state. A company with a factory in one state and sales branches in five others may need several versions of its leave policy inside Zoho People.
I build those versions from the policy your HR advisor or labor law consultant has approved, never from assumptions. The design choices that matter most:
Opening balances come from the old spreadsheet or HR system, verified by HR per employee and signed off before launch.
Indian businesses usually run several attendance realities at once. Plant workers punch on biometric or face recognition devices across rotating shifts, office staff work a general shift, and field sales or service teams are on the road all day. Each needs its own capture method and rules.
Night shifts, weekly offs that differ by unit and compensatory off for working on holidays are where setups often go wrong. I test them with real rosters, including shifts that cross midnight and comp-off claims that must match actual attendance before they are credited. Rules on working hours, overtime and night work in certain establishments are legal questions your advisor should confirm before configuration.
Joining in India comes with a familiar document list: PAN, bank details, address proof, educational certificates, previous employment and relieving letters, photographs and, for those with prior employment, the Universal Account Number for provident fund. Some employers also run background verification through an agency. Aadhaar details carry specific handling restrictions, so ask your legal advisor what you may collect and how it must be stored before adding it to any form.
In Zoho People I set up joining as a tracked workflow:
Exits deserve the same rigor. Notice period tracking, buyout or waiver approvals, department clearances, asset recovery and the inputs payroll needs for the full and final settlement are configured as a checklist, followed by relieving and experience letters generated from templates. A clean exit flow reduces disputes and gets settlements paid on time.
Hiring itself can start upstream in Zoho Recruit, so selected candidates become employee records without retyping.
Zoho offers a payroll product in India, and it pairs naturally with Zoho People: attendance, loss of pay days and leave flow straight into salary processing. The Zoho consultant India page discusses that payroll decision from the accounting side. What matters here is the handoff from Zoho People and the statutory boundary.
Provident fund, ESI, professional tax, labor welfare fund, TDS on salaries and year-end tax forms are payroll and compliance processes. Whether Zoho Payroll covers your states, salary structures and establishment types, or whether a payroll consultant should continue to run them, needs checking for your situation. Either way, Zoho People must deliver:
Personal data is the other responsibility. India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act sets duties for organizations processing personal data, with rules being phased in. Your legal advisor should confirm what applies to your employee data. I restrict salary, identity and medical fields by role, keep branch managers to their own teams and confirm the account's data center region.
Zoho People covers HR operations for many Indian small and mid-sized companies. In some profiles I would recommend adding a specialist tool or choosing differently:
As an independent consultant with no subscription to sell, I will tell you when a simpler or different setup fits better. You can read how I approach wider system choices on my ERP consultant in India page, and the India overview explains how I work remotely with businesses across the country.

Yes. I configure separate leave policies and holiday lists by state or branch and assign employees by location. The rules must come from your HR advisor or labor law consultant, because Shops and Establishments rules and factory requirements vary by state. I then test each version with sample employees.
Many biometric and access devices can feed attendance to Zoho People, directly or through a connector, but support depends on brand and model. I verify your devices early in the project and, where integration is not possible, design a reliable import routine instead of manual re-entry.
Zoho Payroll is offered in India and connects directly with Zoho People. Check its coverage for PF, ESI, professional tax and your states and salary structures first. Where coverage or complexity is a concern, Zoho People can feed your payroll consultant's process with locked attendance and leave data each month.
Yes. Zoho People supports mobile check-in with location capture, and reporting managers approve regularization requests. For sales teams, visit-level tracking in Zoho CRM often adds more value than hours alone. I agree location rules with HR so they are fair and consistent.
Remotely, through video workshops, shared documents and screen-sharing configuration sessions during Indian business hours. On-site visits are possible only by arrangement. You work directly with me, and I can coordinate with your payroll consultant or an implementation firm you already use.
Every business is different. Share where you are today and what you want to fix, and I’ll tell you honestly whether and how I can help.
