What is a fractional ERP lead?
A fractional ERP lead is an experienced ERP professional who works part-time on retainer as a company's client-side ERP lead or product owner. As a fractional ERP lead, I own the ERP roadmap, requirements and priorities, manage the implementation partner, run testing and change control, and keep the system aligned with the business, for companies that need this role but not a full-time internal ERP manager.

Many growing companies run a serious ERP without anyone whose job is to own it. Finance looks after the accounting side, IT handles access, the implementation partner fixes what they are asked to fix, and nobody holds the overall picture. Requests pile up, priorities are set by whoever shouts loudest and the system slowly drifts away from how the business works.
I fill that gap as your fractional ERP lead. On a part-time retainer, I act as your client-side ERP lead and product owner: I own the roadmap and backlog, translate business needs into clear requirements, manage your implementation partner and vendors, run testing and keep leadership informed. You work directly with me, not with a rotating agency team.
It suits companies that need senior ERP judgment on a regular basis but not forty hours a week, as well as those in the middle of an implementation with no internal person to represent the business. Your ERP should fit your business, and someone needs to be responsible for keeping it that way.
The exact mix depends on whether you are selecting, implementing or running an ERP, but the responsibility is the same: own the system on behalf of the business.
A living roadmap that links ERP work to business priorities, such as new entities, product lines, automation or reporting needs, so investment follows strategy rather than the latest request.
One prioritized backlog for enhancements, fixes and change requests, with clear acceptance criteria, so your partner or internal developers always know what matters most and why.
Managing implementation partners, developers and software vendors on your behalf: reviewing proposals and estimates, checking delivered work against requirements and holding everyone to agreed scope.
Turning business requests into clear requirements, checking them against standard features before customizing, and documenting design decisions so knowledge is not lost when people change.
Running UAT with process owners, approving releases, managing upgrade testing and making sure nothing reaches production that has not been checked against real business scenarios.
Regular steering updates for leadership covering progress, risks, spend drivers and decisions needed, plus user access reviews and data ownership rules that keep the ERP under control.
Business first, technology second. You can hire me for one step - a BRD, a gap analysis, a vendor shortlist - or for the whole journey.

A fractional ERP lead makes sense when the ERP matters to the business but the workload does not justify a full-time senior hire, or when you need that experience immediately rather than after a long recruitment process. Typical situations include:
In each case, the common problem is the same: decisions about the ERP are being made without someone who understands both the business and the system. That leads to unnecessary customization, partners working on low-value requests, and a system that slowly diverges from how the company operates. A fractional lead provides that missing ownership at a level of commitment that fits the workload. For broader advisory needs, see my ERP consulting services.
The fractional ERP lead role is the client-side counterpart to your implementation partner's project manager. They manage delivery; I represent the business. In a typical month, the work might include:
I work remotely, joining your regular meetings by video, working in your project tools and keeping documentation in a shared space your team can access. The engagement runs on a monthly retainer with an agreed level of availability, which we adjust as the workload changes, for example increasing around a go-live and reducing during steady periods. The aim is predictable access to senior ERP judgment without the cost and commitment of a full-time role.
The ERP lead role works best when the person in it has no conflict of interest. If the same company that sells development hours also decides what should be developed, the incentives are not perfectly aligned with yours. As an independent consultant, I am not paid by any vendor or partner, so my priorities are the same as the business's: get the most value from the system for the least unnecessary complexity.
Working with me directly also means:
You can read more about my background and approach on the about page. If your ERP needs an owner, this is the most direct way to provide one.
It helps to be clear about how this role differs from the other options available to you.
| Option | Primary role | Best when |
|---|---|---|
| Implementation partner | Configures, develops and supports the system | You need delivery capacity on a platform |
| Project-based consultant | Delivers a defined piece of work, such as a BRD or health check | The need has a clear start and end |
| Fractional ERP lead | Owns the ERP for the business on an ongoing, part-time basis | You need continuous ownership without a full-time hire |
| Full-time ERP manager | Owns the ERP internally every day | The workload and complexity justify a permanent role |
These options often work together. A fractional lead usually works alongside an implementation partner, not instead of one. Over time, some clients grow to the point where a full-time ERP manager is justified, and part of my role then becomes helping define that position, recruit for it and hand over cleanly, with documented processes, decisions and a well-kept backlog.
If your project is currently in difficulty, it may be better to start with ERP recovery or an ERP health check before moving to an ongoing role. To discuss whether a fractional arrangement fits your situation, get in touch.
Tell me about your business and current systems. I’ll suggest the most sensible first step.

It is agreed up front based on your needs and can change over time. Some clients need a few hours each week for backlog, partner and steering work; others need more during an implementation or go-live. The retainer defines availability and response expectations, and we review it regularly so it matches the actual workload.
No. I work alongside your implementation partner as the client-side lead. The partner configures, develops and supports the system; I represent your business, set priorities, review estimates and accept delivered work. This usually makes the partner more effective, because they get clear requirements and quick decisions from one point of contact.
I act as fractional ERP lead for companies on Zoho, Odoo, ERPNext and Microsoft Dynamics 365, and the role translates well to other mid-market ERPs. The core of the job, owning priorities, requirements, partners, testing and governance, is platform-neutral. Platform knowledge helps me judge estimates and spot when standard features could replace custom work.
Yes. When the workload justifies a full-time role, I can help define the job, assess candidates on ERP and process understanding, and hand over with documented processes, decisions, roadmap and backlog. Planning that transition from the start means the knowledge built during the engagement stays with your company.
Yes. I work remotely with companies in different countries and time zones, joining regular meetings by video, using your project and ticketing tools, and keeping documentation in shared workspaces. We agree meeting times that overlap with your core working hours, so decisions and escalations are not delayed.
Every business is different. Share where you are today and what you want to fix, and I’ll tell you honestly whether and how I can help.
