Odoo Manufacturing in Germany

Production planning for variants, routings and outside work

Can Odoo Manufacturing work for a German Mittelstand machine builder?

Odoo Manufacturing can work for a German machine builder or component maker when products follow repeatable structures: variant bills of materials, routings over work centers, outside processing such as hardening or coating, quality checks and lot traceability. Deep engineer-to-order work may need a specialist ERP. Features such as PLM, Quality and the shop floor app depend on edition and version. I assess and design this remotely and independently.

Last reviewed by Vikas Saroj

German machine builders and component makers rarely produce one standard item. A product family may come in dozens of combinations, parts go out for hardening or coating, and the costing compares what an order was expected to cost with what it really cost. Odoo Manufacturing has the building blocks for this, but the structure of bills of materials decides whether planners trust it.

I map products, routings and outside processing with production and engineering, then design the Odoo structure and test it with real orders before configuration grows.

Delivery is remote with English as the working language, and German shop floor training is delivered by your key users.

What I Do

Odoo Manufacturing work for German producers

These services sit at production depth; platform, DATEV and finance topics are on the related Odoo Germany pages.

BoM Structure

Multi-level bills of materials, lines that apply only to certain variants, kits and semi-finished goods, designed so engineering changes stay manageable over time.

Routings and Capacity

Work centers, operations, setup and run times, and alternative work centers, so planners see realistic load before promising delivery dates to customers.

Subcontracting Flows

Outside processing such as hardening, galvanizing or powder coating, with components sent to the subcontractor and finished parts received back into stock.

Quality and Lots

Inspection points at receipt, in production and before dispatch, lot or serial traceability, and records your customers' quality departments can request.

Costing Model

Planned cost from BoM and routing compared with actual cost from consumption and work time, with the method agreed with your controller.

Fit Assessment

An honest view of which production needs Odoo handles in standard, which need Enterprise apps, and when a specialist manufacturing ERP or MES fits better.

Variant bills of materials for machine builders

The quality of an Odoo Manufacturing setup depends on how bills of materials are structured. For a machine builder whose product exists in many combinations, there are a few options, and the choice affects engineering, sales and planning for years.

  • One BoM per variant. Simple to understand but hard to maintain once variants multiply.
  • One BoM with variant-specific lines. Odoo lets a BoM line apply only to certain attribute values, so one structure covers a family. This keeps changes in one place.
  • Modules as semi-finished goods. Recurring assemblies such as frames, control cabinets or drive units become their own items with their own BoMs.
  • Kits. Groups of parts that are sold or consumed together without being produced as a separate step.

I test the chosen structure with real customer orders: does the configured variant pull the right components, does planning create the right sub-orders, and can engineering change a part without touching every variant?

Engineering change control is a separate question. Odoo's PLM app, historically part of Enterprise, adds versions and change orders for BoMs. If changes are frequent and need approval, confirm its scope with Odoo or the partner. The product-level background is on my Odoo Manufacturing consultant page.

Work centers, routings and outside processing

Routings describe how a product is made: which operations run on which work centers, in which order and for how long. In a typical German job shop or series producer that means turning, milling, welding, assembly and testing, each with setup and run times. Odoo uses these to schedule work orders and show the load on each work center.

Points I settle with production planning:

  • which machines are grouped into one work center and which are tracked individually
  • where alternative work centers exist when a machine is busy
  • whether times come from engineering estimates or from recorded history
  • how much planning precision you really need, since detailed scheduling demands disciplined data entry

Outside processing is common in German metalworking supply chains: parts go out for heat treatment, galvanizing or coating and come back days later. Odoo's subcontracting feature handles this by sending components to the subcontractor's location, creating a purchase for the service and receiving finished parts. I test the full cycle, including partial returns and rejected parts, because those cases tend to break stock figures.

Where production consumes tracked lots, the stock side is covered on Odoo Inventory Germany.

Shop floor data, quality checks and the works council

Odoo's shop floor interface lets operators start and stop operations, follow work instructions and record quality checks at the work center. It has historically been part of Enterprise, together with the Quality and Maintenance apps, so confirm the current scope for your version with Odoo or the partner.

Quality design covers:

  • Control points at receipt, during production and before dispatch, with pass or fail checks, measurements or photos
  • Alerts for deviations, with a defined owner and follow-up
  • Traceability from finished serial or lot back to component lots and operations
  • Inspection documents some customers request with deliveries, produced from recorded data

Recording operations per operator creates personal data. Where a works council exists, how that data is captured and used is typically agreed before go-live. Co-determination advice is outside my role; what I bring are configuration options for management to discuss: recording time per work center instead of per person, restricting who sees individual times, aggregating reports by team, or switching tracking off for certain operations. The platform page Odoo consultant Germany describes the wider rollout and documentation approach.

Pre-calculation, post-calculation and costing

German controllers often compare a planned cost per order with the actual cost once the order is finished. In Odoo the planned side comes from the BoM and routing: component costs plus operation times multiplied by work center cost rates. The actual side comes from what was consumed and how long operations really took.

Decisions finance and production make together:

  • Cost rates. Which costs each work center rate includes, such as labor, machine and overhead, and who updates them.
  • Product valuation. Standard cost with variances or average cost, agreed with the controller and the Steuerberater.
  • Outside processing. Subcontractor charges added to product cost through the subcontracting purchase.
  • Analytic tracking. Production costs carried to cost centers or customer orders where management needs margin per order.

I build a costing test: produce a few orders, compare Odoo's figures with the controller's own calculation and trace every difference. Differences usually come from missing times, outdated component prices or scrap not recorded.

Ledger postings and analytic plans are covered on Odoo Accounting Germany. If job costing is your main concern, see ERP for job costing.

When a specialist ERP or MES fits better

Odoo Manufacturing suits many repetitive and configure-to-order producers. I recommend looking elsewhere, or combining Odoo with a specialist tool, when:

  • Engineer-to-order dominates. Each machine is designed for one customer, with deep project structures, long lead times and engineering changes during assembly. German manufacturing ERPs built for special machinery handle this natively.
  • Machine data collection must connect directly to controllers for counts, downtime and process parameters. A dedicated MES does this better, with Odoo receiving summarized results.
  • Process manufacturing with formulas, potency and co-products needs a process-oriented ERP.
  • Fine scheduling across many constrained machines needs a finite capacity planning tool.

A failed or stalled Odoo production rollout is a separate case; my ERP recovery service starts by finding out whether structure or adoption is the problem.

FAQ

Questions About Odoo Manufacturing Consultant Germany

Yes, within limits. Odoo supports attributes, variants and BoM lines that apply only to certain variants, so one structure can cover a product family. Very large combination spaces or engineer-to-order products need careful design or a specialist tool. I test your real product logic before a decision.

PLM, Quality, Maintenance and the shop floor interface have historically been Enterprise apps, while core manufacturing orders, BoMs and subcontracting have been available more widely. The split can change between versions, so check the current list with Odoo or the partner. My requirement table marks each need as standard, Enterprise or extra work.

Odoo's subcontracting flow sends components to the subcontractor, creates a purchase for the service and receives finished parts back into stock, with the service cost added to the product. I test it with partial returns and rejected parts before go-live, since those cases expose gaps.

If you have one and Odoo will record work times per operator, that is usually discussed with it. I cannot advise on co-determination, but I prepare clear descriptions of what data each app records and which configuration options reduce personal tracking, so management can brief the works council.
