Where does Zoho People fit for a New Zealand employer?
In New Zealand, Zoho People works best as the record of who works when: rosters, leave requests, attendance, regional anniversary days and onboarding forms. Holidays Act calculations, payday filing and KiwiSaver deductions stay with your payroll provider. A consultant designs the boundary so payroll receives clean, approved hours and leave, which matters because holiday pay errors usually start with poor time records, delivered remotely.

New Zealand employers have learned the hard way that holiday pay depends on accurate records of hours, days worked and leave taken. Rest homes, hospitality groups, horticulture packhouses and professional firms all need rosters, leave approvals and attendance in a form payroll can use without guesswork.
I work remotely with HR and operations managers to set up Zoho People as that record, while the payroll provider keeps calculating pay, filing with Inland Revenue and handling KiwiSaver.
Employment law interpretation comes from your employment advisor or lawyer, and I build what they approve.
Each piece below is shaped by your employment agreements and the payroll provider you already use.
Shift templates for rest homes, kitchens, retail floors and packhouses, with swaps approved by managers and actual attendance recorded against the roster, giving payroll a reliable picture of days and hours worked.
Annual holidays, sick, bereavement, family violence and parental leave set up as distinct types with evidence rules your advisor confirms, so managers approve the right request in the right way.
National holidays plus the regional anniversary day for each site, with rules for holidays that fall on a weekend and for employees who work on a public holiday, set from advisor guidance.
Starter steps that collect the tax code declaration, KiwiSaver details, bank account and visa evidence for migrant staff, routed to HR and then to payroll before the first pay run.
An approved export of hours, leave, starters and leavers per pay period, mapped to the import format your New Zealand payroll provider accepts, with HR sign-off before cut-off.
Restricted access to health, identity and visa information, retention rules for former staff and a tested process for employees asking to see the information held about them.

The Holidays Act is known in New Zealand for the difficulty of calculating holiday pay and leave correctly, especially for staff whose hours vary. Concepts such as relevant daily pay, average daily pay and whether a day would otherwise have been a working day depend on the actual pattern of work. Many employers and public bodies have run remediation projects, and the law has been under review, so current rules must come from your payroll provider and employment advisor.
Zoho People should not attempt those calculations. What it can do is give payroll the inputs it needs, recorded consistently:
I agree the unit of measure, the cut-off and the export format with your payroll provider before configuration. Balances shown in Zoho People are treated as information for employees; the authoritative balance remains in payroll, and I make that clear on screen so no one disputes leave on the wrong figure.
A business with sites in Auckland, Wellington, Canterbury and Otago does not observe the same regional anniversary day everywhere. Each location needs its own holiday calendar, and employees who move between sites must be linked to the right one. Matariki and the other national holidays sit in every calendar.
Public holidays raise questions that rosters must answer clearly:
Rosters in Zoho People can be built per site and team, with managers publishing them and staff checking shifts on the mobile app. Swaps go through approval, and attendance is compared with the published roster, which is the evidence payroll and your advisor will want if a calculation is ever questioned.
New employees in New Zealand provide a tax code declaration and their KiwiSaver details, and eligible new starters are generally enrolled in KiwiSaver unless they opt out through the proper process. Payroll then deducts contributions, adds employer contributions and reports each pay through payday filing with Inland Revenue. Zoho Payroll availability in New Zealand is something to confirm directly with Zoho; my default design keeps payroll with a New Zealand provider.
Zoho People handles the steps before payroll:
Contribution rates, opt-out timing and deduction rules are payroll matters and change from time to time, so I do not replicate them. The Zoho Books in New Zealand page covers how payroll journals reach the ledger if your books are on Zoho.
The Privacy Act and its information privacy principles apply to employee records. Employers collect information for a lawful purpose connected with employment, keep it secure, allow employees to access and correct it, and do not keep it longer than needed. Your privacy officer decides how those principles apply; I set up Zoho People to support the decisions.
Where staff are covered by a collective agreement or represented by a union, changes to how leave, rosters or monitoring work may require consultation in good faith. I raise these points early, so HR can involve representatives before rollout. Wider questions about Zoho in this market, including local implementers, are covered where I discuss Zoho for New Zealand businesses.
Some New Zealand employers present policies and screens with te reo Māori terms, and seasonal or migrant workforces may need key notices in Pacific or Asian languages. The engagement runs in English. Text in te reo Māori or any other language is written or checked by fluent speakers on your staff or by a local partner, and I make sure the system shows it correctly, including macrons in names and labels.
Zoho People is not always the right choice:
Sessions are remote and scheduled in the part of the New Zealand working day that overlaps with Indian business hours. For the wider system picture, read about my work as an ERP consultant for New Zealand businesses or start from the New Zealand hub.

I do not design it to. Holiday pay, relevant daily pay and average daily pay calculations stay with your payroll provider. Zoho People supplies the inputs those calculations depend on: approved rosters, actual hours, days worked and leave taken, recorded consistently and exported before each pay cut-off.
Zoho People collects the tax code declaration and KiwiSaver details during onboarding and passes them to payroll. Deductions, employer contributions and payday filing with Inland Revenue stay with your New Zealand payroll provider. Ask Zoho directly if Zoho Payroll serves New Zealand before planning otherwise.
Each site gets its own holiday calendar with the correct regional anniversary day, and every employee is linked to the calendar for their usual workplace. When people move sites, the link changes from a set date, so leave and payroll exports reflect the right holiday.
That depends on the data center your Zoho account is created in. Ask Zoho whether an Australian data center is available for Zoho People and your other apps, then record the answer for your privacy officer. I check this before any employee records are migrated.
