What does a Zoho People consultant set up for an Irish employer?
For an Irish employer, a Zoho People consultant turns the employee handbook into working rules: annual leave and public holiday entitlements, records of hours worked, sick leave logging, onboarding documents and performance reviews. Payroll and reporting to Revenue stay with your payroll provider, fed by an agreed export. Your HR advisor interprets employment law and GDPR; I configure and test what they approve, working remotely.

Irish HR teams in growing companies tend to carry the same burden: leave balances in a spreadsheet, hours recorded in a different tool, and starter paperwork spread across email threads. Zoho People can pull those into one employee record with self-service, provided the leave year, public holiday treatment and approval chain are settled before go-live.
I work remotely with Irish SMEs and with the local entities of overseas groups, shaping Zoho People around the contracts they issue and the payroll provider they already rely on.
Interpreting Irish employment law is not my role; that sits with your HR advisor or solicitor. Once they have set the policy down in writing, the system is configured to apply it identically to every employee.
Each item starts from your contracts and handbook, then gets tested on real employee examples before rollout.
Leave year start, accrual by hours or days, carry-over and booking rules your HR advisor has approved, plus a separate entitlement type for each public holiday arrangement you use.
Attendance or timesheet capture that shows start, finish and break times in a form your advisor considers adequate, with manager approval and corrections that leave an audit trail.
Absence categories, medical certificate uploads restricted to HR and a running view of paid sick days used, so that payroll and line managers always read the same figure.
Starter checklists that collect contract acknowledgments, policy sign-offs, emergency contacts and the details your payroll provider needs, with tasks for IT and line managers.
Probation reviews, objective setting and an annual or twice-yearly appraisal flow that line managers can complete on time, without HR chasing every form by email.
A pay period export for your payroll provider and, for subsidiaries, a headcount or change file in the format the parent company's HR team expects.

Irish annual leave can be earned in more than one way, and part-time or variable-hours staff make the choice matter. Public holidays add a second layer: depending on the employee's pattern, the entitlement may be a paid day off, an extra day of annual leave or additional pay, and the rules on who qualifies are specific. Both areas belong to your HR advisor, who should give you a written position before any balance is loaded into Zoho People.
With that position in hand, the configuration questions are concrete:
Opening balances are calculated per person from your current records, checked by HR and signed off before go-live. A wrong balance on the first day costs more trust than any feature can win back.
Irish employers are expected to keep records of the hours employees work, and the form those records take is something your advisor should confirm for your workforce. Many office-based firms have relied on contracts and goodwill rather than actual recording. Zoho People offers several ways to change that, and choosing the lightest one that satisfies your advisor matters more than switching everything on.
Options I compare with HR:
Sick leave sits alongside this. Ireland now has a statutory sick leave scheme, and its entitlement and certification rules have been changing, so I build the days-used counter and the certificate upload around what your advisor confirms is current. Many employers also run a company sick pay scheme on top, with its own limits. Zoho People tracks the days and documents; the payment calculation happens in payroll.
Medical certificates and absence reasons are sensitive data. I restrict them to HR roles and agree with your data protection lead how long they are kept.
In Ireland, payroll reports to Revenue as part of each pay run, and getting that right is the job of dedicated payroll software or a payroll bureau. Zoho sells a payroll application in certain markets; ask Zoho directly whether Irish payroll is supported for your account before building plans on it. In practice I design Zoho People to feed the provider you already trust.
The handoff covers four things, timed to the provider's cut-off:
Format depends on the provider: some accept a structured import, others an agreed spreadsheet layout. I agree the layout with them, build the export and reconcile the first run line by line. Journals from payroll then reach the ledger through Zoho Books for Irish companies or whichever accounting system you use. Wider suite decisions, for instance bundling HR into Zoho One, are discussed on the Zoho consultant in Ireland page.
HR data is among the most sensitive information an Irish company holds, and the Data Protection Commission is the supervisory authority for GDPR in Ireland. How the rules apply to your workforce is for your data protection lead or legal advisor to decide. My part is making sure Zoho People can carry out their decisions without relying on memory.
The practical controls:
Subsidiaries of overseas groups have one extra question: whether employee data will be shared with a parent outside the EU, and on what basis. That is a legal decision, but it affects which fields go into any group export, so I raise it early.
Formal staff consultation is less common in Irish SMEs than on the Continent, but where an employee forum or union agreement exists, your advisor should say whether a new attendance system needs to be discussed first.
Zoho People suits Irish SMEs and smaller subsidiaries that need an HR record, leave, hours and onboarding without an enterprise HR suite. It is not always the answer:
In those cases Zoho People can still serve as the document store and self-service layer next to the specialist tool, or it may be unnecessary, and I will say so. The decision about which systems an Irish business needs overall is covered on the ERP consultant in Ireland page, and the Ireland overview explains how my remote engagements run.
Tell me about your business and current systems. I’ll suggest the most sensible first step.

It can hold a public holiday calendar per location and apply leave rules by employee group. Whether a part-time employee gets a day off, an extra leave day or extra pay depends on rules your HR advisor should confirm. I then configure that treatment and test it with real rosters before balances go live.
Zoho People itself does not run payroll. Zoho offers a payroll product in some countries, so confirm with Zoho whether it is available for Irish companies on your account. Otherwise Zoho People hands approved joiners, leavers, contract changes and absence to your payroll software or bureau ahead of each cut-off.
Yes. Check-in, timesheets or shift attendance can all record start, finish and break times with manager approval. Which method gives you adequate records for your workforce is a question for your HR advisor. I set up the option they agree with and keep corrections visible in the audit trail.
It can produce a headcount, cost center or change export in the layout the parent HR team wants. Before that, your legal advisor should confirm what employee data may go outside the EU and on what basis. If the group already runs a global HR system for every country, joining it may be simpler.
Entirely remotely: video workshops and screen-shared configuration reviews held in the Irish morning, with shared documents in between. You work directly with me, and at the end your HR team receives a written guide so they can maintain leave rules, onboarding flows and exports without depending on me.
Every business is different. Share where you are today and what you want to fix, and I’ll tell you honestly whether and how I can help.
