What does an answer engine optimization consultant do?
An answer engine optimization consultant helps your pages become the direct answer to specific questions, in featured snippets, People Also Ask boxes, voice assistants and AI answers. I research the questions your buyers actually ask, write concise answers that open each section, structure pages with clear question headings, lists and tables, and add FAQ markup where it fits. The focus is precise answers to precise questions.

Many searches are really questions: what does this cost to run, how long does it take, which option suits a business like mine. Search engines, voice assistants and AI tools increasingly answer them directly, pulling a short passage from a page that states the answer clearly. Answer engine optimization is about being that passage.
As an answer engine optimization consultant, I start with question research: finding the exact questions buyers ask at each stage, from search data, People Also Ask results, sales calls and support tickets. Then I help you write concise, accurate answers and structure pages so each question has an obvious, quotable response.
I work remotely with B2B and service businesses worldwide, either as a one-off AEO review of your key pages or as ongoing support for your content team. It sits within my wider SEO consulting work and follows the same rule: be useful first.
Good answers start with the right questions. Each service below is designed to find those questions and answer them better than anyone else.
Mapping the questions your buyers ask, using Search Console queries, People Also Ask results, keyword tools, sales call notes and support tickets, grouped by topic and buying stage.
Drafting or editing short, factual answers that open each section in plain language, then expanding with detail, so the core answer can stand alone when it is quoted.
Question-style headings, logical ordering, numbered steps, comparison tables and definition sentences that make it easy for search engines to match a passage to a query.
Reviewing which snippets appear for your priority questions, what format they use, paragraph, list or table, and reshaping your content to answer in that format more clearly.
Building genuine FAQ sections and step-by-step guides from real customer questions, with FAQPage or other structured data only where it matches visible content and current guidelines.
Making answers short and natural enough to be read aloud, and making sure business facts such as services, hours and locations are consistent for assistants that rely on them.

Answer engine optimization, or AEO, focuses on one unit of content: the answer to a specific question. Search engines show those answers in featured snippets and People Also Ask boxes. Voice assistants read them aloud. AI tools summarize them. In each case, the system is looking for a passage that answers the question directly, accurately and without padding.
That makes AEO narrower and more tactical than the related disciplines on this site:
In practice, AEO work improves pages for human readers as well. Buyers skim. A page that answers the main question in its first lines, then gives detail, is easier to use whether the reader is a person, a search engine or an assistant. That is why I treat it as a content quality discipline first and a visibility tactic second.
Keyword tools show search volume, but they miss many of the questions that drive B2B decisions. I combine several sources to build a question map that reflects how your buyers really think:
I then group the questions into clusters and assign them to a buying stage: understanding the problem, comparing options, evaluating cost and effort, and choosing a provider. Each cluster is mapped to an existing page or a new one, so you avoid writing several thin pages that compete for the same question.
The deliverable is a question map with priorities, recommended page for each question, suggested answer format and notes on what the current best answer gets wrong or leaves out.
A good answer passage usually has three parts: a direct response in the first sentence, a short qualification or context, then supporting detail below. For definitions, that might be a two-sentence explanation. For processes, a numbered list of steps. For comparisons, a table with consistent criteria.
When I review or write a page for AEO, I check:
FAQ sections deserve care. They work well when they answer real questions that do not fit elsewhere on the page. They work badly when they repeat the page or stuff keywords. Search engines have also narrowed which sites get FAQ and HowTo rich results, so I add structured data where it accurately describes visible content, not because of a guaranteed visual reward.
Underneath all of this, pages still need to be crawlable and fast, which my technical SEO work covers.
Featured snippets remain one of the clearest signs that a search engine sees your page as the best direct answer. I review the snippets for your priority questions: which page holds each one, which format it uses and what its answer gets right. Often the winning answer is not the most detailed page, just the clearest. Reformatting an existing section can be enough to compete.
Snippets also change. A page can hold a snippet one week and lose it the next as the search engine tests alternatives or shows an AI-generated answer instead. I track this as a trend rather than a fixed achievement.
Voice and assistant answers follow similar logic but reward even shorter, more conversational responses. They also lean heavily on structured business information. If your services, opening hours or locations are inconsistent across your website, business profiles and directories, assistants may give users the wrong facts. Part of AEO is cleaning that up.
For local businesses this overlaps with local SEO. For B2B firms, the bigger opportunity is usually the research and comparison questions buyers ask early, long before they are ready to talk to sales.
AEO has a measurement challenge: a good answer can satisfy a searcher without a click. That is not always a loss, since buyers who see your brand answer their question may come back later, but it does mean clicks alone understate the impact. I use a set of indicators together:
The last point is where business systems matter. If your contact forms and CRM capture the landing page, source and a structured "what prompted your inquiry" field, you can see which question clusters lead to real conversations. I help set that up so content decisions are based on pipeline, not just traffic.
Reporting is kept simple: what changed, what we learned and which questions to tackle next. No ranking guarantees, and no figures I cannot verify.
Tell me about your business and current systems. I’ll suggest the most sensible first step.

AEO focuses on answering specific questions well, so a passage from your page is used in featured snippets, People Also Ask, voice assistants or AI answers. GEO is broader: it covers how AI systems access, understand and cite your site and brand overall, including crawler rules, entity consistency and third-party sources. The two work best together.
They help when they answer genuine questions clearly and are not duplicated elsewhere on the page. Search engines have restricted which sites show FAQ rich results, so markup alone is not a reason to add them. I use FAQ sections where they serve readers, and add structured data only when it matches the visible content.
No. Search engines choose snippets algorithmically, test alternatives and sometimes replace them with AI-generated answers. What I can do is research the right questions, write clearer answers in the format that query rewards, and track snippet presence over time so you can see whether the approach is working.
No. Voice queries lean local, but B2B buyers ask many research questions early in their journey: what a solution involves, how options compare, what drives cost. Answering those clearly builds visibility and trust long before a buyer is ready to speak to sales, which is often where AEO adds the most value.
Every business is different. Share where you are today and what you want to fix, and I’ll tell you honestly whether and how I can help.
