What is Perplexity search optimization?
Perplexity search optimization is the work of making your pages easy for Perplexity to find, read and cite when it answers questions in your market. Perplexity searches the web live and shows its sources next to each answer. I audit which prompts matter, which sources Perplexity cites today, whether its crawler can reach your pages, and what content gaps keep you out of those answers.

Perplexity works differently from a list of blue links. It runs a search, reads a handful of pages and writes an answer with numbered citations. Buyers researching software, suppliers or consultants increasingly start there. If your pages are not among the sources it reads, your company is simply absent from the answer.
This is a focused audit, not a general AI search program. I take the questions your buyers actually ask, run them in Perplexity, record which sources it cites and why, then check whether your site is technically reachable and whether your content answers those questions clearly enough to be used. The output is a short, prioritized fix list.
I cannot control what Perplexity says, and nobody honestly can. What I can do is remove the reasons it skips you: blocked crawlers, thin or vague pages, missing facts and inconsistent information about your company across the web.
Each deliverable answers one question: why does Perplexity cite someone else, and what would make your page a better source?
A documented list of the questions buyers ask at each stage, written in their words and grouped by intent, built from sales calls, CRM notes and search data rather than guesswork.
For each prompt, the sources Perplexity cites, the page types it prefers, and whether your site, competitors, directories or review sites appear in the answer.
Checks of robots.txt rules, firewall and bot protection settings, and server responses, so Perplexity's documented crawler is not blocked from the pages you want cited.
Where cited sources answer a question directly and your pages do not, with the specific facts, comparisons or definitions your content is missing.
Briefs for the priority pages: answer-first openings, clear headings, factual statements, tables where comparison helps, and named authorship where it adds trust.
Referral tracking for Perplexity visits in analytics, CRM source capture on inquiry forms, and a repeatable prompt check you can rerun on a regular schedule.

Perplexity does not publish a ranking formula, so anyone claiming to know exactly how it picks sources is guessing. What can be observed is consistent enough to work with. It runs live searches for the question, reads a small set of pages, and composes an answer that cites them. Pages it can fetch quickly, that state facts plainly and that match the question closely tend to be used. Pages that bury the answer under marketing copy, rely on scripts to show their main text, or block its crawler tend not to be.
That means traditional SEO still matters. If your page cannot rank or be found for a question in conventional search, it is less likely to be among the pages Perplexity reads. On top of that foundation, Perplexity rewards clarity: a direct answer near the top, specific claims, and structure that makes extraction easy.
It also cites third-party sources heavily. Review platforms, industry directories, forums and comparison articles often appear for commercial questions. Part of the audit is therefore off-site: what do those sources say about you, and is it accurate? This page is a focused Perplexity audit. I start with prompts, not keywords. A buyer might type "which ERP suits a mid-sized distributor with multiple warehouses" rather than a two-word phrase. I collect those questions from your sales team, CRM notes, support tickets and Search Console queries, then group them by stage: problem awareness, option comparison and vendor or consultant choice.
For each prompt I record the answer, the cited sources and the type of each source. Patterns appear quickly. Perhaps Perplexity always cites a competitor's comparison page, or a directory profile with outdated details about your company, or a forum thread that answers a question your own site ignores.
Next comes access. I check:
Answers vary between runs and change over time, so I treat results as a sample and look for repeated patterns rather than reacting to a single response.
These are typical patterns, described generally rather than taken from any client:
Each finding goes into the report with the affected pages, the evidence, and the fix. Some fixes are technical and take a developer an afternoon. Others are content decisions that need input from your sales or product team, because only they know the facts the page should state.
Once the audit is agreed, implementation usually follows this order:
I write the briefs and acceptance criteria, review drafts and check releases. Your team or writers can produce the content, or I can draft priority pages myself when the subject is one I know well, such as ERP, CRM and business systems.
Visibility in an answer engine is hard to measure precisely, so I avoid vanity numbers and track a small set of indicators instead:
The last step is the one most SEO work skips. Because I also work on CRM consulting, I make sure the inquiry form captures the referrer and the first landing page, and that the CRM keeps that source through to the opportunity. That way you can see whether Perplexity visitors become qualified conversations, not just sessions. If they do not, the content probably attracts the wrong questions, and the prompt set needs adjusting rather than expanding.
Tell me about your business and current systems. I’ll suggest the most sensible first step.

No. Perplexity decides which sources to use, its answers vary between runs and its behavior changes over time. What I can do is remove the reasons it skips your pages: blocked access, unclear content, missing facts and inconsistent information elsewhere on the web. That improves your odds of being cited, and the tracking shows whether it is working.
That is a business decision, not only an SEO one. If you want Perplexity to cite your public pages, its crawler generally needs to be able to fetch them. If you have content you do not want used, you can restrict specific sections. I document the options and the tradeoffs so your leadership and IT owner can decide deliberately.
It builds on normal SEO rather than replacing it. Pages that are crawlable, well structured and relevant in conventional search are more likely to be read. The difference is emphasis: Perplexity favors direct answers, specific facts and clear comparisons, and it cites third-party sources often, so off-site accuracy matters more than many teams expect.
Visits from Perplexity usually show up as referral traffic in analytics. I set up a view for it, make sure your inquiry forms capture the referrer and landing page, and check that your CRM keeps that source on the lead and the opportunity. Some buyers will only mention it in conversation, so I also suggest adding it to the source picklist your sales team uses.
Yes, but as separate scopes. This page describes a focused Perplexity audit. Many findings, such as crawler access, answer-first pages and entity consistency, help across all AI search tools. If you want one program covering several engines, my AI search optimization service is the better starting point.
Every business is different. Share where you are today and what you want to fix, and I’ll tell you honestly whether and how I can help.
