SEO Audit

A clear diagnosis before you spend more on SEO

What does an SEO audit consultant deliver?

An SEO audit consultant reviews how a website is found, understood and used by buyers, then hands over a prioritized plan. My audit covers technical health, search intent and content fit, internal linking, AI search visibility and measurement, and it ends with a written report, a ranked action list and a walkthrough session. It is a fixed-scope diagnostic, not an open-ended retainer, so you know exactly what you receive.

Many businesses invest in content, links or a new agency without knowing what is actually holding their website back. As an SEO audit consultant, I start with a diagnosis. I look at how search engines reach your pages, whether those pages match what buyers search for, and whether your tracking can tell you which visits turn into inquiries.

The audit is a defined piece of work with a clear end point. You get a written report, a ranked action list and a session where I walk your team through the findings. You can then implement it in-house, hand it to an agency, or ask me to stay involved through ongoing SEO consulting.

Because my other expertise is business systems, I also check the part most audits skip: whether organic leads reach your CRM with their source and landing page intact. An audit that cannot connect search to pipeline leaves the most important question unanswered.

What the Audit Covers

Seven areas reviewed in one structured audit

Each area is reviewed against your commercial priorities, so the action list starts with the pages and problems that matter most to revenue.

Technical Health

Crawling, indexing, canonicals, redirects, sitemaps, page speed and structured data, reviewed at template level. Where the site needs a deeper engineering review, I scope a separate technical SEO audit.

Search Intent Fit

I compare the queries your buyers use with the pages you have, finding commercial topics with no matching page and pages that target the wrong intent or compete with each other.

Content Quality

Key service, product and category pages reviewed for clarity, depth, evidence and answer-first structure, with notes on what to rewrite, merge, expand or retire.

Internal Linking

How authority and visitors flow through the site: orphan pages, buried commercial pages, weak anchor text and navigation that hides the pages you most want found.

AI Search Visibility

A sample of buyer questions checked in AI answers, plus crawler access and entity clarity, so you know whether AI tools describe your business correctly and which sources they draw on.

Backlink Profile

A review of who links to you, which pages earn links, and whether there are obvious gaps or risky patterns, without recommending bulk link buying.

Tracking and Attribution

GA4, Search Console and conversion events checked for gaps, and organic source data traced into your CRM so leads can be attributed to the landing page that started them.

Ranked Action Plan

Every finding scored for business impact and effort, grouped into quick wins, structural fixes and longer projects, with an owner suggested for each.

When an SEO audit is the right first step

An audit makes sense whenever you are about to make a decision about search and do not have a clear picture of where you stand. The most common situations I see are:

  • Organic inquiries have flattened or dropped and nobody can explain why
  • You are about to hire an agency or an in-house SEO and want an independent baseline first
  • A redesign, platform change or domain move is planned (in which case I usually recommend SEO migration consulting alongside the audit)
  • Leadership is asking what SEO actually contributes to pipeline and the reports cannot answer
  • Your site has grown over years of campaigns, and nobody is sure which pages still matter

In each case, the value of an SEO audit consultant is an outside view without a sales agenda. I am not trying to sell a long retainer or a link package. The audit tells you what is wrong, what to fix first and what you can safely ignore. If the findings show that most of the problems are deep in the site's engineering, I will say so and recommend a dedicated technical SEO audit rather than stretching this one.

My audit method, step by step

I treat an SEO audit the way I treat a business process review: understand how it works today, find where it breaks, then rank fixes by impact. In practice that means:

  1. Context first. Which products, services and markets drive revenue, who your buyers are, and what has changed on the site recently.
  2. Data from several sources. A full crawl, Search Console performance and indexing data, GA4 landing page data and, where available, CRM lead sources. No single tool drives the conclusions.
  3. Page-type grouping. Findings are grouped by template and root cause, so a problem on one service template is reported once, not as hundreds of separate URLs.
  4. Intent mapping. Each priority topic is matched to the page that should rank for it, which exposes gaps and pages that compete with each other.
  5. AI answer sampling. I run a set of real buyer questions in AI tools to see how your business is described and which sources are cited.
  6. Prioritization. Every issue gets an impact and effort score tied to the pages that matter commercially.

The checks themselves are rigorous, but the output is written for decision-makers as well as specialists. For a sense of the technical foundations involved, my technical SEO checklist covers the basics every site should have in place.

What you receive at the end

The deliverables are designed to be used, not filed. A typical SEO audit produces:

  • An executive summary of the main risks and opportunities, in plain language, for owners and senior managers
  • A findings report organized by the seven audit areas, with examples, screenshots and the root cause of each issue
  • A ranked action list in spreadsheet form, with impact, effort, affected page types and a suggested owner for each item
  • A keyword-to-page map for your priority topics, showing which page should target which intent
  • A content action list covering pages to rewrite, merge, expand, redirect or retire
  • A measurement note listing tracking gaps and the changes needed to attribute organic leads in your CRM
  • A walkthrough session where I take your team through the findings and answer questions

Developer-facing items include acceptance criteria so they can be turned into tickets without rewriting. If you want help implementing, I can continue through ongoing SEO consulting, review changes before release and verify them afterward. If you prefer to run it yourselves, the action list is designed to stand on its own.

Diagnostic examples from typical audits

Every site is different, but certain patterns come up often enough to describe. These are illustrative examples of the kind of findings an audit surfaces, not data from a specific client:

  • The service page that never ranks. A core service page is thin, while three old blog posts on the same topic split the signals. The fix is consolidation and redirects, not more content.
  • Leads with no source. The contact form sends inquiries to the CRM, but the original landing page and channel are lost on submission, so organic search looks weaker than it is.
  • Indexed clutter. Tag pages, internal search results and filtered URLs are indexed in large numbers while important pages are crawled less often.
  • Missing commercial pages. Buyers search for a specific use case or industry, and the site has no page that answers it directly.
  • Confusing entity signals. The company name, services and locations are described differently across the site, profiles and directories, and AI tools repeat the confusion.

None of these require exotic techniques to fix. They require someone to notice them, explain why they matter, and put them in the right order.

KPIs to track after the audit

I do not promise rankings or traffic figures, because they depend on competition and on changes outside your control. What an audit does set up is a baseline and a set of indicators you can track as fixes are released:

  • Indexed pages for each priority template, compared with pages submitted
  • Impressions and clicks for priority topics and landing pages in Search Console
  • Average position trends for the topics in the keyword-to-page map
  • Organic conversions and inquiry form submissions by landing page in GA4
  • Organic leads, qualified opportunities and won deals by source in your CRM
  • Mentions and citations of your brand in sampled AI answers
  • Core Web Vitals status for key page groups from field data

The CRM indicators are where my business systems background matters most. Many teams measure SEO by traffic because it is easy. I set up the audit so that, once tracking gaps are fixed, you can see which organic pages produce real pipeline. That is the same connection I build in CRM consulting and B2B lead generation work.

Questions About SEO Audit

The SEO audit is a fixed-scope diagnostic with a defined set of deliverables and a clear end point. SEO consulting is ongoing advisory, where I help plan, prioritize and review work over time. Many clients start with the audit to get a baseline, then decide whether they need ongoing support, an agency, or simply an internal owner working through the action list.

Ideally read access to Google Search Console and GA4, a view of how inquiries arrive in your CRM, and a list of the products, services and markets that matter commercially. Server logs and CMS access are helpful on larger sites but not required. I can start with a public crawl while access is being arranged.

Yes. Every finding is scored for business impact and effort and placed in a ranked action list. The top of the list is usually a small set of changes on commercially important pages or templates. I also mark items that can be safely ignored, so your team does not waste time chasing tool warnings that do not matter.

Yes, at a diagnostic level. I check whether AI crawlers can access the site, sample real buyer questions in AI tools and note how your business is described and which sources are cited. If AI visibility turns out to be a priority, a dedicated generative engine optimization engagement goes much deeper.

No. An audit removes barriers and points effort in the right direction, but rankings and traffic depend on competition, content, links and search engine changes. What I can do is give you an accurate diagnosis, a sensible order of work and the measurement setup to see whether changes are moving the indicators that matter.

Still have questions? Let’s talk them through.
