How does an independent Zoho consultant help Qatar companies?
For Qatar companies, an independent Zoho consultant works out which apps from the suite should carry the work and how they are set up for a market without a general VAT, with corporate income tax linked to ownership, QFC entities under their own framework and a heavy share of project-based contracting. I design entities, job costing, Arabic documents and payroll links in Zoho, and keep the ledger flexible for tax change.

Much of the private sector in Qatar earns its revenue through contracts: building, fit-out, MEP, engineering services, facility upkeep and the suppliers that feed them. Zoho appeals to these firms because CRM, Books, Projects and Creator share one account, with a subscription that scales with users. I work with Qatari companies remotely to decide whether that suite can carry their contracts properly.
The difficult questions are specific to Qatar. With no general VAT in force today, how should tax settings be left so they can be switched on later? How does a partly foreign-owned company keep the records its tax advisor needs? Does a QFC entity belong in the same Zoho account as an onshore sister company? I answer these before anyone configures a screen.
Every item is scoped from your contracts, entities and ownership, not from a fixed package.
A chart of accounts, tax fields and customer records arranged so Zoho Books runs cleanly without VAT today, yet could take on a consumption tax through configuration if Qatar's position changes. Your advisor confirms the treatment; I build it.
Onshore companies, QFC entities and branches mapped to Zoho Books organizations, with the profit split, related-party charges and withholding records your corporate income tax advisor asks for at year end.
Each contract set up as a project with budget, committed cost, certified value and retention, using Zoho Projects and Books together, or a Creator app where the volume of variations needs more structure.
Material requests, site receipts and subcontractor certificates captured on mobile through Zoho Creator, routed for approval, and turned into purchase orders and bills without retyping.
Timesheets from sites flow to payroll and back to project cost. Where Zoho's own payroll product is not offered for Qatar accounts, I connect Zoho People to the payroll tool that produces your bank salary file.
A line-by-line read of proposals from Doha-based Zoho firms or offshore developers: what is configured versus custom built, how contracts and retention are handled, and who owns the Deluge code after handover.

Qatar has not introduced a general VAT, so most businesses here run Zoho Books with sales tax unused. Confirm where things stand with the General Tax Authority and a qualified advisor, because regional tax policy does move, and a setup should not assume that today's answer is permanent.
Leaving tax off is easy. Leaving the system ready for a change takes a little more thought:
Corporate income tax is the more immediate concern. It generally falls on the share of profits linked to non-Qatari ownership, and withholding can apply to certain payments to non-residents. Zoho Books will not calculate that liability, but tagging related-party transactions, separating non-deductible costs and keeping vendor residency data clean saves your advisor a great deal of work. Tax advice stays with your advisor; my job is the quality of the records they work from.
For a contractor, the test of any Zoho setup is whether the project manager and the finance team see the same margin. I usually combine three apps. Zoho Projects holds the contract structure, milestones and tasks. Zoho Books carries budget lines, purchase orders, supplier bills and progress invoices tagged to each project. Zoho Creator fills the gaps standard apps leave: material requests from site, subcontractor payment certificates, variation logs and retention schedules.
The design work is in the details a Doha quantity surveyor will ask about:
None of this is exotic, but Zoho does not provide it out of the box, so each item becomes a documented requirement, a configuration choice or a small Creator app. My construction ERP page for Qatar covers the wider industry picture. When contract volumes are large, the honest answer may be a different platform, which I cover further down this page.
Qatari groups often hold more than one kind of legal entity. An onshore company registered with the Ministry of Commerce, a company established in the Qatar Financial Centre, a free zone entity or a branch of a foreign parent may all sit under the same owners. The QFC operates under its own legal, regulatory and tax framework, so confirm with your advisor how each entity is treated before deciding how Zoho is arranged.
In practice I give every legal entity a separate Zoho Books organization, holding its bank accounts, numbering sequence and audit trail apart, and share customers and pipeline through Zoho CRM where that is appropriate. Shared services, such as a head office recharging management fees, need matching entries on both sides and a monthly check that the balances agree.
Reporting is in Qatari riyals, yet many purchases arrive in dollars, euros or other currencies, and some foreign parents want results in their own currency. I agree the base currency per organization, the source for exchange rates and when revaluation runs. For owners who want the whole group on one page, Zoho Analytics can pull the organizations together, although it is a reporting layer rather than a formal consolidation with eliminations.
Government-linked buyers and some regulated sectors in Qatar ask where business data is stored. Zoho has been adding regional data centers, so verify which locations are open to an account created from Qatar, and confirm with your legal team whether any contract or regulator requires data to remain in the country. Make that choice at sign-up; moving a live account between regions later is disruptive.
Payroll is the other area to verify rather than assume. Check whether Zoho Payroll is offered for Qatar-based organizations today. Where it is unavailable, a common pattern is Zoho People for attendance, leave and employee files, a payroll product that produces the bank file for the Wage Protection System, and a monthly journal posted to Zoho Books by project and department. For site-heavy firms the hard part is collecting accurate hours from many locations, not the calculation itself.
Doha has a number of firms implementing Zoho, alongside developers working from abroad. I do not compete with them. I write the requirements they quote against, compare proposals on equal terms, and test their work on your behalf before you accept it. My ERP consultant page for Qatar describes how I schedule remote sessions within your working week, and the Qatar overview gives the wider market context.
Zoho suits many Qatari service firms, traders and smaller contractors. I advise against it, or against using it alone, in a few recurring situations:
An ERP evaluation tests these scenarios against your own contracts and documents, so you decide from your own paperwork, not from a polished demo.
Tell me about your business and current systems. I’ll suggest the most sensible first step.

Yes. Many Qatar businesses run Zoho Books with tax settings unused, because no general VAT applies at present. Confirm the latest position with your advisor before relying on that. I still structure items, customers and templates so that a tax could be introduced later through configuration rather than a rebuild.
Often it can, with each legal entity set up as a separate Zoho Books organization so ledgers, banks and audit trails stay apart. Whether shared CRM data or shared users are appropriate depends on your regulatory and confidentiality position, which your advisor and compliance team should confirm before I design it.
With some design work, yes, for moderate volumes. Zoho Projects and Books cover budgets, costs and invoices, and a Zoho Creator app usually handles retention schedules, variations and subcontractor certificates. For large contractors with many complex contracts, I compare Zoho with Odoo or a construction ERP before you commit.
Ask Zoho whether its payroll product is available to Qatar-based organizations right now and whether it supports your bank's WPS format. Where it does not, a dedicated payroll tool takes attendance from Zoho People, and I post payroll journals into Zoho Books by project and department so labor cost reaches job reports.
No. I act for you as an independent Zoho consultant: I define requirements, review the firm's proposal and design, follow configuration decisions and run acceptance testing. The implementer keeps building; I make sure what they build matches how your contracts, entities and payroll actually work.
Every business is different. Share where you are today and what you want to fix, and I’ll tell you honestly whether and how I can help.
