What does ERPNext need to work well in New Zealand?
To work well in New Zealand, ERPNext needs GST tax templates and a return report your accountant trusts, a route to Peppol through an access point or app, a decision between Frappe Cloud and self-hosting, and someone who can support the Frappe framework over time. I set out those requirements, test them with your accountant and guide the move from Xero or MYOB, remotely and without ties to any vendor.

ERPNext suits a particular kind of New Zealand business: one that wants more than an accounting app, prefers not to pay per-user licensing on every module, and has access to someone technical, either on staff or on contract. Distributors, small manufacturers, agricultural service firms and technology companies with internal developers are the profiles where it tends to make sense.
Its core covers stock, buying, selling, manufacturing, projects and accounting. The New Zealand layer is lighter. GST needs careful template setup and a report your accountant signs off, Peppol depends on an outside connection, and payroll stays with local software. I design each of these before the rest of the build so there are no late surprises.
There is no link between my advice and Frappe or any hosting provider, and the work is delivered remotely.
Each service targets a New Zealand requirement ERPNext does not settle on its own.
Sales and purchase tax templates for local, zero-rated and imported transactions, set up with your accountant and checked against a GST return report built or adapted for New Zealand.
A specification for linking ERPNext to a Peppol access point provider or an existing app, covering outbound invoices, inbound supplier bills, participant identifiers, status messages and error handling.
Frappe Cloud or your own cloud server compared on hosting region, backups, upgrade timing, custom app support and the technical skills your team really has available today.
Masters, open items, balances and stock moved from Xero or MYOB and their add-ons, with tracking categories mapped to ERPNext cost centers and a reconciliation your accountant signs.
New Zealand and Australian companies in one ERPNext site, each with its own tax templates and currency, plus inter-company transactions and group views in NZD and AUD.
A clear plan for who fixes bugs, applies upgrades and maintains New Zealand customizations after go-live, whether that is your developers, a Frappe firm or Frappe itself.

In ERPNext, tax logic lives in templates attached to sales and purchase documents, in item-level tax rules and in the accounts behind them. That model is flexible enough for New Zealand GST, but it does not arrive preconfigured for it, and I would not assume a community-contributed New Zealand setup is complete or current without checking it for your version.
With your accountant, I define the cases the business meets, typically standard-rated local sales and purchases, zero-rated exports including sales to Australia, GST on imported goods recorded with freight and customs costs, and credit notes. Each case becomes a template or item tax rule, and each is tested with sample documents.
The return itself is where most of the effort goes. A report needs to total the boxes your accountant fills in from the right accounts and transactions. Depending on what is available for your version, that might be an adapted standard report, a community app or a small custom report in a separate Frappe app. Whatever the route, your accountant compares its output with figures they calculate independently before you rely on it. Treatment decisions stay with them; consistent data stays with the system. The ERPNext Accounting page explains the ledger structure in more depth.
Peppol is New Zealand's chosen e-invoicing network, and its importance for you comes down to who your customers are. Government agencies and some larger organizations may prefer or expect Peppol invoices, and receiving supplier bills electronically can save data entry. ERPNext itself is not a Peppol access point, so the realistic routes are an external access point provider connected through ERPNext's API, or a maintained Frappe app if one fits your version.
I write the specification for whichever route you choose: which invoice fields map to the Peppol document, where the NZBN and participant identifiers are stored, how status and rejections come back, and how inbound bills are matched to purchase orders and receipts. Then I test it in a staging site before customers are switched over.
Other integrations usually include bank feeds or statement imports, an ecommerce store, a freight or courier platform, and the payroll system. Payroll stays with New Zealand payroll software that handles payday filing and KiwiSaver; ERPNext receives a summarized journal by cost center. I keep every connection in an integration register with an owner and an alert, as described on my system integration page.
Frappe Cloud is the managed hosting service run by the makers of the framework. It looks after servers, backups and updates, and supports custom apps within its rules. Check which hosting regions are available for your plan, as latency and data location both matter to a New Zealand team.
Self-hosting, for example on an Australian region of a major cloud provider, gives full control over location, upgrade timing and server access. It suits businesses with a capable IT person or contractor, and groups whose policies require infrastructure they manage. It also puts backups, patching and recovery testing on your side of the line, and I make sure that responsibility is written down with a name against it.
New Zealand privacy law applies to customer, supplier and staff data held in ERPNext, wherever it is hosted. Review the hosting provider's terms with your advisor, and I will design role permissions, restricted fields, retention for old contacts and employees, and a lean set of personal fields in any migration file, all in line with your policy.
Whichever route you take, I recommend a standing upgrade routine: test the next release on a copy of your site, rerun the GST and Peppol scenarios, then upgrade production. General guidance on ERPNext lives on my ERPNext consulting page.
Most New Zealand ERPNext projects start from Xero or MYOB plus inventory or job apps. I map chart of accounts, tracking categories, items, customers, suppliers and open transactions, run trial loads, and reconcile balances and stock with your accountant before cutover, following the ERP data migration approach. Groups with an Australian entity can hold both companies in one site, each with its own templates and currency; for that side of the Tasman, see ERPNext in Australia.
ERPNext is not right for every New Zealand business. I would steer away from it when:

Share your business requirements with me and I will help you understand the right process, architecture and platform before implementation.
ERPNext can model New Zealand GST through tax templates and item tax settings, but it is not preconfigured for it and the return report usually needs adapting or building. I set this up with your accountant and test the report against their own figures before you rely on it.
Through an external Peppol access point provider connected by API, or a maintained Frappe app if one fits your version. I write the field mapping and error handling, check that identifiers such as your NZBN are stored correctly, and test sending and receiving in staging first.
It can be, once you have confirmed which regions your plan offers and reviewed the terms against your privacy obligations. The alternative is self-hosting, often in an Australian cloud region, which gives control but makes your team responsible for backups, patching and upgrades.
That should be decided before go-live. Support may come from your own developers, a Frappe implementation firm or Frappe's own service plans. I document the setup and customizations, agree a support owner and set an upgrade test routine so New Zealand features keep working.
Every business is different. Share where you are today and what you want to fix, and I’ll tell you honestly whether and how I can help.
