Dynamics 365 in Ireland

Your side of the table in a Dynamics 365 project

Why would an Irish company use an independent Dynamics 365 consultant?

Dynamics 365 is sold and implemented in Ireland through Dynamics 365 partners, who also supply the licenses. An independent Dynamics 365 consultant sits on the customer's side of that arrangement: confirming whether Business Central or Finance and Operations fits, checking what the Irish localization covers, writing requirements, reviewing partner proposals and running acceptance testing. I hold no Dynamics 365 partnership, sell no licenses and deliver the work remotely.

I work remotely with Irish companies weighing up Microsoft Dynamics 365, most often Business Central. Many are Irish entities of American or British groups that already live in Microsoft 365 and Teams; others are growing Irish firms leaving an older on-premises system or a small accounting package.

Microsoft does not usually sell or implement Dynamics 365 directly to companies of this size. A partner licenses it, configures it and often supports it afterwards, so the partner shapes much of the outcome. My role is to make sure your requirements, not the partner's preferred template, drive that outcome.

Dynamics 365 advice independent of Microsoft and its partners

I do not configure Dynamics 365 for you or sell its licenses. I make sure the people who do are building the right thing.

Product Fit

A reasoned recommendation between Business Central and Finance and Operations for your Irish entity, based on transaction volume, entity count, manufacturing depth and the group's direction, not on what a partner prefers to sell.

Localization Review

A check of what the Irish version of Business Central provides for VAT, reporting and banking in your release, confirmed against Microsoft documentation and tested on a sandbox with your accountant's scenarios.

Group Design

Chart of accounts mapping, dimensions, intercompany postings and consolidation designed so the Irish books satisfy local filings while the parent receives figures on its own timetable.

Partner Selection

A requirements pack sent to shortlisted partners, scripted demos built from your scenarios, and a scoring sheet that compares proposals on scope, assumptions and support terms.

Proposal and License Review

A line-by-line read of statements of work and license quotes, flagging missing migration effort, light testing allowances, unclear support levels and license tiers you may not need.

UAT and Cutover

Test scripts written from your requirements, sessions run with your staff, defect tracking with the partner and a cutover checklist that ties balances back to the old system.

Business Central or Finance and Operations for an Irish entity

Dynamics 365 covers more than one ERP product. Business Central is the one built for growing companies and group subsidiaries that need dependable finance, stock, purchasing and lighter manufacturing. Finance and Operations, a family of larger applications, targets complex, high-volume and multi-country organizations. For most Irish businesses I work with, Business Central is the realistic candidate.

The exception is the Irish entity of a group that already runs Finance and Operations elsewhere. There the question is whether Ireland joins the group instance, adopting its template, or runs a smaller Business Central company connected to it. Joining keeps reporting consistent but can force processes that do not fit a small local team. A separate Business Central environment gives flexibility but adds integration and consolidation work.

I lay out these options with group IT and finance in the room, listing what each means for local reporting, licensing, support and future changes. The decision belongs to you and your group, made with the trade-offs on paper. My Business Central page covers the product itself, and the Dynamics 365 overview explains the wider family.

Irish VAT, reporting and the localized version

Microsoft publishes Business Central in localized versions for many countries, and some country versions are provided by partners rather than Microsoft. Check the current country availability list and which party maintains the Irish version before you assume anything about its scope. I then compare that scope with your actual tax and reporting needs.

The Irish test set covers domestic VAT at different rates, intra-EU supplies and acquisitions, reverse charge purchases, imports, trade with Northern Ireland and Britain, and the reports your accountant uses for returns to Revenue. Each scenario runs on a sandbox environment. Anything the localized version does not handle becomes a partner extension, a configured workaround or a documented manual step, chosen openly rather than discovered after go-live.

Structured e-invoicing is an item to plan for. The EU is moving toward electronic invoicing and digital reporting, and your advisor should confirm what Irish rules will require of you. In Business Central this may be covered by standard features, by a partner app or by an access point connector, and the right answer depends on your version. I add it to the requirements so partners address it in their proposals.

Working with Dynamics 365 partners as the buyer

In Ireland, as elsewhere, Dynamics 365 reaches customers through partners who handle licensing, implementation and ongoing support. Partners differ in industry focus, development style and how much they rely on their own add-ons. Some quote fixed scopes, others time and materials. Comparing them without a common brief is difficult.

I have no Dynamics 365 partnership and no license margin, so I gain nothing from which partner you choose or how many users you license. That lets me do the buyer's work:

  • prepare a requirements pack so every partner prices the same scope;
  • script demos around your hardest Irish scenarios rather than a standard tour;
  • check license quotes for tiers and add-ons you may not need;
  • read statements of work for missing migration, testing and training effort;
  • stay on through the build to review designs and run acceptance tests.

Everything is delivered remotely and in English, with workshops in the Irish morning that overlaps my day in India. The ERP RFP consulting page explains the selection method, and the Irish ERP consulting page puts Dynamics 365 alongside the other options.

Tenant, data location and the rest of the Microsoft estate

The online edition of Business Central is hosted by Microsoft and tied to a Microsoft Entra tenant. For an Irish subsidiary this raises practical questions: is the environment created in the group tenant or a local one, which region hosts it, and who administers users. Confirm the environment's location when it is created, since your data protection lead will want EU hosting recorded alongside Microsoft's processing terms.

GDPR then applies inside the system. I design permission sets so that payroll summaries, staff details and customer contacts open only for people whose job requires them, and agree retention for old records. Payroll itself normally stays with an Irish payroll provider, with summarized journals posted into Business Central.

The Microsoft estate is a real advantage when used well. Power BI can report across Irish and group entities, Excel and Teams integration reduces exporting, and Power Automate can handle approvals. I keep these in scope only where they solve a stated requirement, so the project does not sprawl. For integration planning see ERP integration, and the Ireland hub for my other Irish work.

When Dynamics 365 is a poor fit in Ireland

Dynamics 365 is a capable platform, yet I advise against it, or ask for a harder look, in some Irish situations:

  • Small service firms with simple invoicing, where partner-led implementation and ongoing support add cost a lighter tool such as Zoho for Irish businesses avoids.
  • Subsidiaries of groups standardized on another ERP, where a local ledger feeding the parent's system is simpler than introducing Microsoft.
  • Companies with no internal owner who will depend entirely on a partner for every change, and resent it.
  • Distributors or makers wanting one low-cost suite for stock, web shop and accounting, who may find Odoo for Irish operations a closer fit.

None of this is a verdict on the software. It is a reminder that fit depends on your size, your group and your appetite for partner dependence. An honest ERP evaluation tests Dynamics 365 against these alternatives with your scenarios and your data. If it wins, you approach partners with a clear brief and known priorities; if not, you have avoided a costly mismatch before any license was bought.

FAQ

Questions About Dynamics 365 Consultant Ireland

Neither. My practice has no tie to Microsoft and earns nothing from licenses or implementation fees. Licensing and configuration come from a Dynamics 365 partner you choose. I work for you alongside that partner, from requirements and selection through design review and acceptance testing.

Microsoft publishes localized versions for many countries, and some are maintained by partners. Check the current availability list and who maintains the Irish version, then test it. I run your VAT and reporting scenarios on a sandbox with your accountant so gaps are visible before contracts are signed.

Yes, and sometimes it should. A separate Business Central company can feed the parent through consolidation or an integration. The trade-off is consistency against local fit, and I set out both sides with group finance and IT before a decision is taken.

Ideally before you contact partners, so requirements drive the selection. I can also join mid-project to review designs, check scope against the contract or rescue acceptance testing. Joining late still helps, although by then the partner and the license tier are usually fixed, so my effort goes into design quality and testing.
