What does an Odoo projects consultant do for Canadian service firms?
For a Canadian engineering firm, IT consultancy or agency, an Odoo projects consultant designs how fixed fees, hourly work and retainers become invoices in Canadian or US dollars, with the sales tax your advisor confirms for each client's province. I also structure timesheets so eligible research hours can be tagged for SR&ED review, support French documents for Quebec, and work remotely across your time zones.

Canadian service firms often sell to clients in several provinces and to customers in the United States at the same time. One engineering project might be invoiced in Canadian dollars to an Ontario client, the next in US dollars to a company in Texas, with staff logging hours from Vancouver, Calgary and Montreal.
Odoo Project and Timesheets can handle that mix well, but the design has to answer Canadian questions up front: which tax applies to services for a client in each province, which currency carries each contract, which hours might support a research claim, and which clients expect French on every document.
I am an independent consultant, unconnected to Odoo or any implementer, and I work with Canadian firms remotely. Live sessions are planned around your head office hours, with recordings and written design notes for teams several time zones away, so a project lead in Halifax and a controller in Vancouver work from the same decisions.
Every piece of work here is about getting cross-province and cross-border project billing right the first time.
Fixed-fee phases, hourly time and materials, monthly retainers and prepaid support hours defined as Odoo service products, each with an invoicing rule tested against your proposals.
Service products and fiscal positions set so each invoice picks up the GST, HST, PST or QST treatment your advisor confirms for the client's location, including US and overseas clients.
Projects priced in US dollars and costed in Canadian dollars, with a clear rule for exchange rates in margin reports and for how USD receipts are matched to invoices.
Timesheet categories and analytic tags that let staff mark work your SR&ED advisor may review, so the evidence is collected as the work happens rather than reconstructed later.
French and English labels for projects, tasks, service products and invoice layouts, so Quebec staff can log time comfortably and Quebec clients receive documents in French.
Analytic plans for client, office and service line, with labor costed at loaded rates in Canadian dollars, so partners compare margins across provinces on a fair basis.
Support tickets and technician visits linked to contracts and invoices through Helpdesk or Field Service, where your edition includes them, for IT and building services firms.
Active projects, unbilled time and retainer balances transferred from QuickBooks, Sage or a time tracking tool, with the cutover agreed with your accountant at a period end.

For Canadian project firms, the tax on a service invoice usually depends on where the service is considered supplied, which is often tied to the client's location rather than to your office. A Toronto consultancy billing a client in Nova Scotia, one in Alberta and one in British Columbia may need different combinations of GST, HST and provincial tax on otherwise identical invoices. Quebec clients bring QST, and services billed to non-resident businesses may be treated differently again.
Those rules are for your accountant or tax advisor to confirm. My job is to make Odoo apply them reliably:
The tax return and ledger side, including GST/HST and QST reporting, is covered on my Odoo Accounting page for Canada. The general billing mechanics behind this page are on the Odoo Projects page.
Cross-border work is normal for Canadian consultancies, software firms and engineering practices. A firm may quote a US client in US dollars, pay a contractor in Canadian dollars and report to its owners in Canadian dollars, with a USD bank account in between.
Odoo can price a sales order in the client's currency and post costs in yours, but margin reporting needs decisions that software will not make for you:
I agree those rules with your controller first, then configure analytic plans for client, office and service line so partners can compare a Calgary project and a Montreal project on the same basis. Labor costs are loaded with benefits and employer contributions so margins are not flattered. For currency design as a broader topic, see ERP for multi-currency.
Canadian technology and engineering firms that claim SR&ED credits often struggle to evidence the hours afterward. Odoo timesheets can help if the structure is set before work starts: tasks or tags for experimental development, a short description field staff actually complete, and a report that pulls those hours by project and person. What qualifies is decided by you and your SR&ED advisor, not by the timesheet design, and I keep that boundary clear.
Language is the next consideration. Staff in Quebec may prefer to work in French, and clients there commonly expect French documents. Odoo supports translated product names, task stages and invoice layouts, but someone has to own the translations, and I build that into the setup plan.
Statutory holidays also differ by province, which affects capacity planning and missing-time reports. I set working schedules per office so a holiday in one province does not show as missing hours in another.
On the approval side, Canadian teams usually work well with a weekly cut-off set in head office time, a manager approval before invoicing, and a report of unsubmitted time. Approval tooling for timesheets is richer in Enterprise, which is worth confirming before you plan this step. Sector pages for engineering and SaaS businesses give more context.
Canadian contractors bill through progress draws and must manage holdback, a portion of each payment retained under provincial lien and construction legislation. Several provinces have also introduced prompt payment rules with defined timelines for invoices, notices of non-payment and adjudication. Those mechanics are specific to construction and vary by province. Odoo can run the projects, purchasing, equipment and timesheets for a contractor, and milestones can stand in for simple progress invoices, but holdback ledgers, statutory notices and progress billing against a schedule of values fall outside the standard product. A contractor would be looking at extra modules, custom work or a system built for construction.
If you are a contractor, compare options with my construction ERP page for Canada and confirm holdback and tax treatment with your advisors.
For consultancies, agencies and technology firms, Odoo is often a sound fit, and I help independently: mapping how you sell and deliver, running business analysis with finance and delivery leads, and reviewing an implementer's design against your real contracts. Yes. Fiscal positions linked to the customer can replace default taxes with the combination that applies to their location, and service products can be classified where treatment differs. Which taxes apply is for your tax advisor to confirm. I configure the rules and test invoices for each location before go-live.
Yes. Odoo invoices in the client's currency and reports in your company currency. The important decision is which exchange rate drives project margin and where exchange differences are posted. I agree those rules with your controller before configuration so the reports are trusted.
They can make evidence far easier to gather, if tasks or tags for eligible work are set up before the work starts and staff add short descriptions. What qualifies, and how the claim is prepared, is for your SR&ED advisor. Odoo provides the records; it does not decide eligibility.
Yes. Odoo's interface is available in French, and products, task stages and invoice layouts can be translated. The work is in owning and maintaining those translations. I plan that into the rollout so French documents stay accurate as your service catalog changes.
Not as a standard Project feature in most setups. Holdback tracking, progress billing against a schedule of values and prompt payment notices usually mean extra modules, development work or a contractor-specific product. I weigh those routes independently before you commit.
