How can Indian IT and services companies run projects in Odoo?
Indian IT, engineering and consulting firms can run fixed-bid milestones, time and materials, and dedicated team billing in Odoo, with timesheets feeding invoices to overseas clients in foreign currency and to domestic clients with GST by place of supply. I design that setup independently and remotely on IST, including utilization views, margin in rupees and the right GSTIN on each invoice, with tax treatment confirmed by your CA.

Indian service companies often bill a client in Chicago in dollars, a client in Germany in euros and a client in Pune in rupees from the same delivery team. Time is tracked in a ticketing tool or a spreadsheet, invoices are prepared in Tally, and the founder learns which projects lost money only when the quarter closes.
Odoo Project, Timesheets and Sales can bring delivery and billing into one place. The design has to reflect Indian realities: dedicated team contracts billed per resource per month, export invoices with the right GST treatment, domestic invoices from the correct GSTIN, TDS deducted by customers, and margin measured in rupees against salaries paid in rupees.
I work remotely with Indian firms on IST as an independent consultant, with no tie to Odoo or any implementer. Sessions are planned around your billing cycle and GST filing calendar, and I review decisions with your CA wherever tax is involved.
The work below is shaped by how Indian IT, engineering and consulting companies sell and deliver to clients at home and abroad.
Fixed-bid milestones, monthly time and materials, dedicated team billing per resource and domestic retainers configured as Odoo service products, each tested against a real statement of work.
Project invoices to overseas clients in their currency, with the GST treatment and invoice wording your CA confirms for exports of services, and receipts matched to the right project.
Projects linked to the registration they are delivered from, with SAC codes on service products and fiscal positions so domestic invoices carry the tax type your CA confirms.
Billable, non-billable and bench hours by person, team and delivery center, so resource managers see utilization weekly rather than in a quarterly spreadsheet.
Daily or weekly entry rules, manager approval before invoicing and missing-time alerts for large teams, using validation features where your edition includes them.
Where engineers log work in a separate ticketing or development tool, an integration or import routine that brings approved hours into Odoo projects without retyping.
Customer receipts recorded net of TDS deducted by Indian clients, so project receivables and invoice status reflect what was actually paid and what is claimable.
Active projects, open milestones, unbilled hours and customer balances brought over from Tally and spreadsheets, with cutover timed sensibly against the GST return cycle.

Monthly billing in Odoo
Indian technology and engineering services firms usually sell in three ways. A fixed-bid project is invoiced against milestones such as requirement sign-off, user acceptance and go-live. A time and materials contract is billed monthly on approved hours at rates per role. A dedicated team, sometimes called a resource or offshore development center model, bills a monthly amount per resource regardless of the exact hours, with adjustments for leave or partial months.
Odoo handles the first two directly through service products that invoice on milestones or on delivered timesheet hours. The dedicated team model needs a little more thought:
Many Indian firms also run domestic retainers for digital marketing, compliance or consulting work, which fit Odoo's prepaid or recurring patterns. I test each model end to end before go-live. The general billing mechanics are on the Odoo Projects page, and sector context is on my IT services page.
Project invoices in India sit inside a demanding GST framework, and services add their own questions. Invoices to overseas clients for exports of services are commonly issued without GST under a letter of undertaking or with tax paid and refunded, depending on the business's choice and eligibility. Domestic invoices carry IGST or CGST and SGST depending on place of supply. All of this is for your CA to confirm; I make Odoo apply the decision consistently.
In practice that means:
The GST returns, TDS reconciliation and Tally migration on the ledger side are covered on my Odoo Accounting page for India. This page stays with how project billing feeds those processes.
For an Indian services company, people are by far the largest cost, so utilization and project margin are the measures leaders watch most closely. Odoo can give both, but only if timesheets are complete and costs are realistic.
I set up four things:
Many engineering teams already log work in a ticketing or development tool and will not double-enter time. In those cases I plan an integration or a validated import that brings approved hours into Odoo. Validation screens for timesheets differ between Community and Enterprise, so confirm what your edition includes. For leadership reporting, see ERP for management dashboards.
Indian contractors bill very differently from IT firms. Work is measured, recorded and certified, then invoiced through running account bills, with mobilization advances recovered over time, retention held against each bill, and material advances, price escalation and works contract GST treatment to consider. Government and infrastructure contracts add their own documentation. Odoo can manage the projects, purchasing, stores and timesheets around this, and milestones can approximate a simple bill, but measurement books, certified RA bills, retention tracking and escalation are beyond what the standard Project app was built for. Contractors normally add specialist modules, commission development or choose an ERP designed for construction.
If you are a contractor or EPC business, compare options with my construction ERP page for India before committing, and confirm GST and TDS treatment with your CA.
IT, engineering design and consulting firms usually suit Odoo well. My part is independent of any vendor: I document how you sell and deliver, design billing and timesheet rules, and review an implementer's work against your contracts. For platform-wide advice, read my Odoo consulting page for India, my ERP consulting in India page and the India hub.

Yes. Each resource can be an order line invoiced on a monthly quantity, while timesheets are still recorded for internal cost and client reports. Leave and partial-month adjustments need a consistent rule, usually a credit line. I set this up and test it against your existing dedicated team contracts.
Odoo can invoice overseas clients in their currency and apply the GST treatment configured for exports, through fiscal positions on the customer. Whether you export under a letter of undertaking or another route, and what the invoice must state, is for your CA to confirm. I make sure project invoices follow that decision every time.
Yes, with a multi-company or branch structure chosen with your CA. Each project is linked to the registration it is delivered from, so invoices carry the right GSTIN and tax type. I design this early because changing the structure after go-live is disruptive.
Not necessarily. An integration or a validated import can bring approved hours into Odoo projects for billing and cost. The choice depends on how clean the source data is and how often you invoice. I assess both routes before recommending one.
Not out of the box. Measurement, certified running account bills, mobilization advance recovery and retention typically need specialist modules, development or an ERP built for contractors. I set those options side by side, independently, before you choose.
