Technical fixes for sites with a long Kolkata history

What does a technical SEO consultant do for a Kolkata website?

Technical SEO for a Kolkata website means locating and ranking the faults that stop search engines from reading, crawling and trusting a site. For Kolkata businesses these often include Bengali text in legacy fonts or images, saree and fashion catalogs with endless filters, Puja microsites rebuilt every year, and old group domains full of forgotten folders and PDFs. I audit remotely and brief your developers on each fix.

Many Kolkata websites carry their history with them. Bengali text set in old non-Unicode fonts, product catalogs that grew one photo shoot at a time, festival microsites rebuilt every autumn, and group domains with years of forgotten folders and PDFs. Visitors may not notice, but search engines struggle to read, crawl and trust these sites.

Working remotely, I trace the faults that keep such sites from performing in search, rank them by business impact and write fix instructions your developers or agency can act on. I then check the fixes and track how search engines respond.

What I Do

Audits shaped by what Kolkata sites carry

Each audit focuses on the issues that matter for your type of site, with fixes ranked so your developers know where to start.

Bengali Text Audit

I check whether Bengali content is real Unicode text, legacy font encoding or images of text, and plan conversion so search engines can read it.

Catalog Crawl Control

For saree, handloom and fashion stores, I review variant URLs, filters, duplicate product pages and out-of-stock handling so crawlers spend time on pages that sell.

Seasonal Site Strategy

For Puja, festival and event sites, I design stable URLs that carry value from one year to the next instead of starting again each season.

Legacy Domain Cleanup

I map old folders, subdomains, HTTP versions and investor PDFs on long-established group sites, and plan redirects and consolidation without losing what still ranks.

Speed on Real Phones

I test pages on mid-range phones and mobile networks, then target the heavy images, scripts and hosting limits that slow them down.

Developer-Ready Briefs

Every finding comes with evidence, the fix, its priority and a way to verify it, written so an in-house developer or agency can implement it.

Bengali text that search engines cannot read

Some older Bengali websites, including publications, literary and cultural organizations, schools and family businesses, were built before Unicode Bengali was dependable on every device. Their text was typed in legacy fonts that map Bengali letters onto Latin character codes. On screen, with the right font installed, it looks correct. To a search engine, it is a string of meaningless Latin characters.

Other sites avoid the problem by putting Bengali text inside images or scanned PDFs: a poster, a menu, a notice or a full magazine issue. That text is effectively invisible to search unless it also exists as real text on the page.

My audit checks a sample of pages for each pattern. Where legacy encoding is found, I plan a conversion to Unicode, which usually means a scripted conversion followed by proofreading by Bengali readers on your team, because automated conversion can garble conjuncts and punctuation. I also check that pages declare the right language, that a suitable web font loads quickly, and that converted pages keep their original addresses or redirect cleanly. Where content lives only in images or scanned PDFs, I recommend which items deserve a text version first, based on what people search for. The broader approach to Indian-language sites is on my technical SEO consultant India page.

Saree, handloom and fashion catalogs

Kolkata has a large number of saree, handloom, ethnic wear and fashion sellers moving online, from established stores near the shopping districts to weaver collectives selling Bengal handloom directly. Their catalogs share technical patterns. Each product is often a one-off or a small batch, so items sell out and disappear quickly. Photographs are large and numerous. Filters for fabric, weave, color, occasion and price can create huge numbers of crawlable combinations.

Left alone, these patterns waste crawl attention on near-empty filter pages, produce many soft errors from sold-out items and slow mobile pages with heavy images. I review how filters generate URLs and recommend which combinations should be indexable, typically the handful that mirror genuine queries, like a named weave or fabric, while the rest are kept out of the index.

For sold-out pieces, the right answer depends on whether similar items will return: some pages should stay with related suggestions, others should redirect or be removed. I also check product structured data, image sizes and formats, and whether the store platform outputs clean canonical tags. For the commercial side of online catalogs, my ecommerce SEO page goes further.

Puja and festival sites that return every year

Durga Puja produces a burst of websites each autumn: pandal guides, committee pages, sponsor campaigns, event listings, food festival pages and travel offers. Many are built quickly, with a new site, subdomain or folder each year, and left to decay when the festival ends. The following year, the work starts from zero, and any links or authority earned earlier are lost.

The technical fix is mostly about structure. A stable address for the recurring event, updated each year, accumulates links and recognition over time. Past years can live in an archive section rather than separate sites. When a new platform is needed, the old pages should redirect to their closest equivalents, not to the homepage.

These sites also face sudden traffic during the festival days, when slow hosting or a heavy page can fail just as interest peaks. I review hosting capacity, caching and image weight ahead of the season, and check that event structured data, maps and opening details are correct. The same thinking applies to other annual moments, such as the book fair season or year-end sales. If your content plan for the season needs work too, my SEO consultant in Kolkata page covers the festive calendar.

Decades-old domains of established groups

Long-established Kolkata groups, whether listed companies, family businesses or institutions, often have websites that have been rebuilt several times on the same domain. Each rebuild left traces: old folders still reachable, HTTP and HTTPS versions both live, subdomains for divisions that no longer exist, and large collections of PDFs such as annual reports, notices, brochures and tender documents. Separate group companies may each have their own domain, sometimes competing for the same searches.

The audit starts with an inventory. I combine a full crawl with Search Console data and, where available, server logs, to see which old URLs still receive visits or links and which are dead weight. From that, I plan redirects for anything with value, removal or blocking for anything that should not be public, and a clear canonical version of each page.

Investor and regulatory documents need care, because some must remain available. I recommend a stable, well-organized document section with descriptive titles rather than scattered files. Where several group domains overlap, I map which site should own which topic. If a rebuild or domain merger is planned, my SEO migration consulting page explains how to protect existing visibility during the move.

Working with your developers, agency and host

I do not usually change your site's code myself. Kolkata businesses often have an in-house developer, a local web agency or a freelancer who built the site, and the fixes are most durable when they make them. My job is to give them precise instructions: the fault, the affected pages, the reason it hurts visibility, the change required and a test that proves it is done.

Hosting is a frequent constraint. Many small and mid-sized sites in the city sit on low-cost shared hosting that struggles with speed and traffic spikes. I measure the impact with real tests on mid-range phones and mobile networks, then advise whether caching, image optimization and a content delivery network will be enough or whether better hosting is worth the cost.

The work is remote, with shared spreadsheets, screen-share reviews and a tracked list of issues. After each release, I recrawl affected sections and report what changed in indexing and performance, without promising specific rankings. For a structured first step, my technical SEO audit page describes the full audit, and the technical SEO service page covers ongoing support.

FAQ

Questions About Technical SEO Kolkata

If the text uses a legacy non-Unicode font, it is stored as Latin characters that only look Bengali with that font. Search engines read the underlying characters, which make no sense. I check for this and plan conversion to Unicode with proofreading by Bengali readers.

It depends. If similar pieces will return or the page has links and visits, keeping it with related suggestions is often better. If not, a redirect to the closest category may suit. I recommend a rule based on your catalog and search data.

It usually wastes effort and search value. A stable address updated each year, with past years archived, builds recognition over time. If you change platforms, old pages should redirect to their closest new equivalents.

Usually not. I write detailed fix briefs for your developer, agency or hosting provider, review changes on staging where possible and verify them after release. This keeps the fixes in the hands of the people who maintain your site.
